Consultation Guides
Organizing a Timeline for Legal Consultation
Record the sequence of events and any uncertain information to help explain your matter.
Start with the key events
Write down the events most relevant to your question. Use date order where possible. Mark unknown dates as approximate. There is no need for a lengthy narrative before your consultation objective is clear.
Separate facts from assumptions
Distinguish what you experienced directly, information from others, and your own assumptions. This shows what still needs checking. Avoid presenting a legal conclusion as a fact in the initial summary.
Note the available materials
Beside each event, note whether you have a related letter, agreement, or communication record. The list helps you locate materials when requested. Keep originals safely and do not upload them through the intake form.
Finish with your questions
Write what you want to understand and what you hope to clarify. For example, identify agreement sections needing review or missing information. Mention known dates so consultation availability can be discussed.
